Zara Collins
Wabi Sabi

5th of August – 15th of August 2015

20150618-006

I am currently exploring the notion of Wabi-Sabi, the Japanese concept of beauty and the impermanence of life. Characteristics of the Wabi-Sabi aesthetic include irregularity, simplicity, modesty and an appreciation for the integrity of natural objects and processes. Experimenting with ceramics, glaze-combinations and sterling silver to create unique jewellery pieces that celebrate intuition and imperfection.

During my secondary studies I was lucky enough to visit Japan on a Cultural Exchange, staying with host families in Himeji and the Tokyo Hills. This incredible experience exposed me to the history, conventions, traditional crafts, food and people of Japan. I have been obsessed with Japanese textile designs and fascinated by traditional and contemporary Japanese culture ever since.

The process of transformation is at the crux of Zara Collins’ contemporary art practice. Her work is bound together by ideas of reinterpretation, appropriation and reinvention.  A variety of techniques, processes and styles are utilized to create her unique artworks, objects and jewellery. In addition to exhibiting new work regularly, Zara is an independant curator, specialising in Australian contemporary craft.

Zara divides her studio time between Darlinghurst, Sydney and the Illawarra coast.
