Works on Paper
Denis Clarke – Elisabeth Cummings – Anais Lera

26th Jun – 20th Jul 2013

Three artist with 3 different aproaches: Denis Clake, Elisabeth Cummings, and Anais Lera.  All 3 artists show how the simple gesture of a line, has the power to conjure and suggest images either dreamed or real. these images hold within them  a sense of the familiar as well as the imagined.  Works On Paper is a celebration of nature, we see the image and read the title, yet what we see and feel is the intense emotional responses that each artist has captured and released onto paper .

My work is grounded in working directly from a subject, be it in the bush or the city. What interests me is ‘creating a process of informed experiment’. By this I mean allowing myself to risk and play with media while aligning my senses with the observed. It is the otherness or feel of a subject which provides the impetus to experiment and find new solutions with mark.

For me working before nature is deeply complex and even astounding. The challenge is to find graphic statements and abstractions which truthfully parallel perceptions and go towards a resolved image.

Lera graduated from the National School of Arts at La Cambre, Brussels, Belgium, specialising in typography and printmaking. While travelling, she visited China, Laos and Thailand, and exhibited work in Bentlage (Germany) and Kyoto (Japan).

Anais has mostly worked in typography and printmaking (woodcut, etching). Since arrived in Australia, her recent project focuses on drawing; exploring the varying connections between geometric and biological pattern. Anaïs considers matter to be a combinative architecture, superposed from microcosm to macrocosm, all constructed by form, movement and repetition. She loves to use this process to reconstruct her own biological systems or ambiguous animal forms.
