Kate Dambach: Statement
the pause
that moment in-between
space to be
being there, being here
nothing more
doing less
past distraction
before oblivion
just beyond reach
the threshold
a cloud of unknowing
qualia abound
this closeness, such distance
poetic exactitude
yoke
My current body of work is a meditation on the pause at the end of the breath. I explore the idea of isolated transitional spaces and how they hold the essence of the moment. I create moments with paint to express this inbetween, drawing inspiration from vast wilderness that is awe inspiring yet soul crushing and takes your breath away, lengthening that pause. And from the often missed and thought mundane everyday moments like the turn of the breath from inhale to exhale. These simple yet magical moments hold the wonder of possibility; they are the threshold, the world in slow motion for that split second before it all begins. I look at these happenings from a phenomenological perspective highlighting the essence; the experience and the strange and paradoxical nature of the ways things overlap and intersect. I am currently exploring this through oil on board, utilizing saturated color, glazing layers and subtle shifts to create an emotive experience through paint.
