Victoria McIntosh: Statement
I now have quite the collection of old underwear, foundation garments and petticoats – my studio is awash with shades of beige in every imaginable manmade fibre. My response remains the same with each new discovery – one of discomfort and unease and yet I am still drawn to them.
These objects are designed with the sole purpose of control, whether sucking you in or padding you out they are sold on the promise of achieving the current beauty standard of the day – an impossible moving hierarchy of shape, size and shade
These discarded undergarments in all their synthetic nastiness — challenge me – they challenge my relationship with my own body and society’s relationship with the less than perfect body. And they are also kind of funny and as well as sad — and with that comes the challenge of transforming them into something else again – with a new story to tell.
