Yu Fang Chi is a Taiwanese-born Australian artist and curator working within textile, silversmithing, sculpture, and spatial installation in Asia, Australia, and Europe. For ‘Inner Crease’, 2017 Chi received the Diana Morgan RMIT Postgraduate Gold & Silversmithing prize and in 2018 she graduated from RMIT with a PhD.
Chi’s artistic practice involves repetitive fibre-related techniques which can be connected to traditional domestic art processes. She engages with intensive material-based processes, artistic research and curatorial projects to deftly investigate the role of femininity and its cultural connotations. Through various methods of exploring line and form – via traditional craft techniques, wire, and textile installation, as well the use of lighting and shadow – Chi challenges the way weaving to operate and be presented.
