Traces of beauty exist everywhere around us. Sometimes we just need the time and space - physical and emotional - to be able to pause to experience them. This series asks the viewer to stop for a few minutes and soak in the details that can go unseen in everyday life. The location of each of the photographs could be anywhere. While they contain the traces of people that have come before, it is the absence of anyone recognisable in the images that allows us to contemplate and appreciate the concept of beautiful solitude. All images in the series were photographed using traditional medium format film.
Mark Forbes has always enjoyed spending time photographing on the streets, watching the ebb and flow of daily life. Until recently, a lot of his work featured people and the busyness of life. Forbes’ aim for the Beautiful Solitude series was to focus more on the environments that humans engage with and live in. He found that the more time you spend appreciating the whole scene, the more you are able to understand its intricate details and find beauty in the ordinary. Mark Forbes has preferred shooting personal work on film for a number of years, finding this an integral part of his creative photographic work. He believes that it forces the photographer to slow down and visualise the final image - resulting in more engagement with the process and thus more satisfaction in the result.
